Collapsible bins are easy to be sceptical about until one has been loaded and opened from the front. A single 23-quart bin is the way to find that out: it fits a closet shelf, takes up a little over three inches when folded flat, and holds up to thirty pounds. If it works, the same bin comes in multi-packs.

What it does well

Four things worth knowing

1Buying one bin answers the only question that matters, which is whether the shelf height in a particular cupboard suits this size.
2Front doors open without pulling the bin out, so a shelf above it does not have to be clear to reach the contents.
3The lid lifts off completely when the bin is used as an open tray rather than a closed box.
4Folded flat it stores behind a wardrobe door, which is the difference between keeping a spare bin and throwing it out.
