Storage Bins in plain terms

Storage bins are sold by quarts, which is a number almost nobody can picture. The useful translation is this: 23 quarts is a closet shelf, 28 quarts is a run of books or files, 48 quarts is a toy box a child can move, 76 quarts is a duvet, and 97 quarts is garage shelving. Choosing is mostly a question of which of those five scales matches the space you are standing in front of.

Four of the five capacities share one construction, and its three features are what separate these from a stack of cardboard. Two hinged doors on the front mean a bin at the bottom of a stack can be opened where it stands. A removable lid means it can be filled with the lid off rather than stuffed through a flap. Castors mean a full bin rolls instead of being carried - though note that the singles ship without them, and only the multi-packs have the four wheels.

The 28-quart line is the exception and deserves its own sentence. Its walls are clear and cut to a right angle rather than tapered, it uses polypropylene with GRS-certified recycled content, it folds flattest in the range at 1.37 inches, and it has no castors and no published load rating. It stacks by seating the bin above in the lid groove. If the point is seeing what is inside without opening anything, that is the line to look at.

Pack count is the second decision and the arithmetic no longer rewards the biggest box automatically. The 48-quart three-pack works out cheaper per bin than the four-pack, while at 76 and 97 quarts the three and four-packs cost exactly the same per bin. Only the six-pack at 48 quarts and the five-pack at 97 beat their smaller siblings. The per-bin column in the table below is there to be read before choosing.

Common questions

How high can these be stacked?

Three high is the practical limit for the larger sizes, mainly because the top bin stops being reachable rather than because the stack is unstable. The 23 and 28-quart bins are short enough to go higher if the shelf allows.

Do they need tools to put together?

No. The panels clip together by hand and come apart the same way, which is what lets a bin fold flat - between 1.37 and 3.15 inches depending on the capacity - when it is not in use.
